Backu psoftware offers some advantages over just co pying a file to a removable me-
dium. Most offer data compression techniques to reduce the number of disks or tapes
needed to hold the archived data. Many also offer cataloging routines and single direc-
tory or file restore capabilities.
You can create four different types of backups:
A full backup (or archive backup) includes every directory, folder, file, and
program from the hard disk.
An incremental backup includes only those files that have been modified since
the last backup. An incremental backup clears the archive bit of the files it copies
to the backup medium.
Eachdirectoryandfileontheharddiskhasanarchivebitassociatedwithit.Thisbit
is used by backup utilities to determine which files should be included in the backup.
A differential backup includes the files that were created or modified since the
last full backup. A differential backup does not clear the archive bit.
