KENGTUNG (KYAINGTONG)

The poshest option in town, the Kyainge
Tong New Hotel by the lake, is government
owned.

Princess Hotel HOTEL $$
(%21319; [email protected]; s/d $30-50;
a) The most popular midrange choice in
town, the Princess Hotel has a great location
near the market, and capable service. The
rooms are large and come equipped with a
television, air-conditioning, a fridge and a
phone.

Sam Yweat Guest House HOTEL $
(%21235; cnr Kyaing Lan 1 Rd & Kyaing Lan 4 Rd;
s/d $10/20) Bare but tidy rooms in a con-
veniently located residence. Some share a
bathroom, but all rooms are the same price.
Another 29 rooms should be fi nished by the
time you read this. The same people run a
far less inviting place on Airport Rd.

Private Hotel HOTEL $$
(%21438; http://www.privatehotelmyanmar.com; 5 Airport
Rd; s/d $20/28) Away from the centre, on the
road to the airport, this place off ers plenty
of creature comforts. The eccentric owner
makes every eff ort to please and there’s a
cute lawn with benches where you can soak
up the sun. Rooms have a TV, a minibar and
24-hour hot water.

Law Yee Chain Hotel HOTEL $$
(%21219; Kyain Nyan Rd; s/d $20/30; a) Above
a Chinese bakery just south of the market,
Law Yee Chain Hotel opened in late 2007
and everything still feels new. The smart
rooms have air-con, TV and carpet, and im-
maculate bathrooms with hot showers.

Harry’s Trekking House HOTEL $
(%21418; 132 Mai Yang Rd; r $7-20) Harry’s is
about 1½ miles north of the lake in Kana-
buroy village. Most rooms are located in the
two modern buildings and are outfi tted with
a TV and a bathroom, although there are
also a few simple wooden rooms. Treks and
transport can be arranged from here.

Saeng Tip Hotel HOTEL $
(%22445; Airport Rd; r $15; a) If you’ve ever
stayed in a hotel in rural China, this starkly
bare place will seem familiar. The good news
is that they claim to provide electricity all
day and night.

Noi Yee Hotel HOTEL $
(%21144; 5 Mine Yen St; s/d $5/10) A former roy-
al residence, the Noi Yee has fallen on hard
times. The faded colonial charm ends at re-
ception – rooms are grungy and the shared
bathrooms need some serious TLC.

 5 Eating
Many restaurants in Kengtung have a dis-
tinctively Thai fl avour – no doubt thanks
to the trickle of Thai tourists. The following
restaurants are open for breakfast, lunch
and dinner.
For local eats, your only options are the
morning market or dinner with a generous
local family.
