INFECTIOUS DISEASE


TREATMENT
■ Most effective in first 4 days
■ Sensitive to multiple medications
■ Severe=penicillin (as with syphilis) or ceftriaxone
■ Mild=doxycycline (as with Lyme disease)

OTHERS
■ For other causes of fever in the traveler, see Table 8.18.

VACCINATIONS

■ See Figure 8.3 for standard immunization schedule.
■ For vaccine contraindications see Table 8.19.
■ Live vaccines
■ Give either together or >30 days apart.
■ Contraindications
■ 1° immunodeficiency (eg, HIV/AIDS with low CD4 count)
■ 2° immunodeficiency
■ High-dose corticosteroids for >14 days
■ Other immune-modulating agents (eg, chemotherapy)
■ Pregnant patients
■ Significant contacts of the above

Consider empirically covering
for leptospirosis in the traveler
presenting with aseptic
meningitis.
