Thomas and me.

or smell like a zoo.” I said, “I can’t picture doing this.”


He said, “Would you just hang with me?”


Isaid,“You’vegottoprovetomethatthisissomething
that has merit.”


ThatwasjusttheopeningThomasneeded.Halberthadn’t
saidno.Overafewsubsequentmeetings,Thomaswore
himandtherestoftheteamdown.Heremindedthemof
the Three Plagues, of the fact that people in nursing
homesaredyingofboredom,loneliness,andhelplessness
andthattheywantedtofindthecurefortheseafflictions.
Wasn’t anything worth trying for that?


Theyputtheapplicationin.Itwouldn’tstandachance,
Halbertfigured.ButThomastookateamuptothestate
capitaltolobbytheofficialsinperson.Andtheywonthe
grant and all the regulatory waivers needed to follow
through on it.


“Whenwegottheword,”Halbertrecalled,“Isaid‘Oh
my God. We’re going to have to do this.’”
