AC1 Fundamentals Unit 4 – Inductive Reactance
Exercise 1 – Inductive Reactance
EXERCISE OBJECTIVE
When you have completed this exercise, you will be able to determine inductive reactance (XL)
by using calculated and measured values. You will verify your results with an oscilloscope.
DISCUSSION
- The impedance created in a circuit by inductors is referred to as inductive reactance (XL).
- Inductive reactance is calculated using this equation: XL = 2πfL
where XL is the reactance measured in ohms
f is the frequency in hertz
L is the inductance in henrys
2 π is a constant and indicates that this equation
applies to sine waves only - Inductive reactance is directly proportional to frequency and inductance.
- Inductive reactance is independent of the signal amplitude.
