Operational Amplifier Applications Unit 1 – Introduction to the Circuit Board

Exercise 1 – Component Location and Identification

EXERCISE OBJECTIVE

When you have completed this exercise, you will be able to locate the major circuit blocks on the
OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIER APPLICATIONS circuit board. You will verify your results by
correctly identifying these circuits and their major components.

DISCUSSION

  • Each op amp is an 8-pin integrated circuit (IC) installed in a DIP socket.

  • The op amp IC has a small “dimple” in the upper left corner which identifies pin 1. The pin
numbers are counted consecutively in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction, starting at the
    “dimple”.

  • Bypass capacitors are located below each op amp.

  • Decoupling provides a local low ac impedance path to ground. This improves the stability of
    the amplifiers.

  • Additional electronic components are present to allow each circuit block to be configured for
    specific applications.

  • Most op amp applications have output load resistors. The exception is the FULL-WAVE
    BRIDGE DRIVER/CONVERSION circuit block.
