Limo Driver
Don’t build a castle when you can build a kingdom.
I received a call from someone organizing a national conference for
Christian radio broadcasters. He said they meet once a year and their next
meeting would be at Disney World in Orlando. They wanted me to speak
at the event, and he asked me to pray about whether I should come.
“You pray about it,” I told him. “It’s Disney World. I’m coming!”
I don’t know if just thinking about something is the same as praying
about something. Probably not. I think people often get the two confused.
Prayers sometimes are spontaneous cries out to God for help and other
times are well-organized attempts to lift our voices together for a specific
purpose. I’ve never related to scripted prayers. It would be like my kids
talking to me, or Jesus talking to His friends, using 3 x 5 - inch note cards.
When I do it right, my prayers feel like a conversation with a friend and
my words feel more like breaths of air than fancy speeches. We need
every type of prayer I suppose, but I don’t think we need to sound like
each other. God isn’t wowed by fancy words; He delights in humble
hearts.
I couldn’t wait to get to the radio broadcasters event so I could see
what Disney World in Florida looked like. I’m a yellow cab guy, so I got
off the plane in Orlando and walked over to the taxi stand. On the way
there, I saw a guy with a black hat, a suit, and a sign standing in front of a
long black limo. His sign had “Bob” written on it. My first thought was
he was there to pick up another guy named Bob. Maybe Bob Dylan was in
