of fat in the liver, transporting of other nutrients throughout the body,
and is associated with the adrenal glands’ regulation of stress.
Choline is also very important for the brain in the production of
acetylcholine, and in particular with memory. Egg yolks and fish are
excellent sources of choline in the diet. A common indication for the
need for choline supplementation is asthma. Wheezing, coughing
from bronchial spasm, and excessive mucous production during exer-
cise has been termed “exercise-induced asthma” (although it occurs
more in those who don’t exercise) and is typically associated with a
need for choline. Normally, the body’s response to activity or exercise
is to dilate the airway passages to allow for better air passage. In exer-
cise-induced asthma, this dilation is followed by excessive narrowing
of the air passages. Choline can help the nervous system control prop-
er bronchial action. In this situation, a high dose of choline may be
needed initially; for example, 500 mg several times daily until breath-
ing improves.
Case History
Roy was a slim, 44-year-old construction worker who wanted
to “run with the guys” after work, though he could run with
them for only about 15 minutes due to his severe asthmatic
reactions. This was due in part to the stress of running at too
high a heart rate without proper training, but also a need for
choline. After two weeks of taking choline, his symptoms were
gone. Eighteen months later, after improving his aerobic system
and eating eggs daily to keep his choline intake adequate, Roy
qualified for and competed in the world masters’ track and field
meet in Australia, where he won a box full of medals.
Skin and Hair Care
The best nutrition for healthy skin and hair starts with a great diet,
especially balanced fats, adequate protein, good intestinal function
and proper hydration. Adequate circulation of blood, discussed later,
is also very important. If your skin or hair is very dry and unhealthy,
or you have other skin problems, this is usually a sign of reduced
health, including the need to improve the diet. Focus on total health,
not just skin and hair. While this topic could fill a whole book, this
