Thepresentstudyconsidersaquestionofcomparativeliterature,thatofaparticu-
larliterarytoposofdawn,the‘Alba’,and,beyondthat,thewiderhorizonsofthe
mythopoesisofdawnanditsassociatedlocusamoenusintheghazaltradition,with
particularreferencetoitsdevelopmentinthepoemsofḤāfiẓofShīrāz.Speakingof
mythictime,thekernelofthisessaywasactuallywrittenmorethantwodecades
ago,in1986,andthenburiedawayinadrawer.^3 Afewyearslater,myelderdaugh-
ter,Sahar,wasborn.Sincesheisnowatthedawnofherowncollegecareer,andthe
hourofpartingfromherchildhoodhomeapproaches,itseemedanopportune
momenttoresurrectthischapterasamementoofallthehappydaysshehas
brightenedourhousehold.
