  1. Select the BicycleProductManagers role from the roles drop down list and click OK.
An Excel worksheet opens with a PivotTable to browse the BI Semantic Model.

  2. Drag Sum of SalesAmount from the fi eld list to the Values section.

  3. Drag EnglishProductCategoryName from DimProductCategory to the Row Labels
    section.

  4. Drag English ProductSubcategoryName from DimProductSubcategory to the Row
    Labels section below EnglishProductCategoryName.
Notice that only sales data for the Bikes Product Category displays. The DAX fi lter specifi ed
in the BicycleProductManagers role effectively limits the data as expected.

Deploying BI Semantic Models to an Analysis

Services Instance

Only BI Semantic Models defi ned as Tabular Projects can be deployed to an Analysis
Services Tabular Mode instance. This does not mean that only projects originally devel-
oped in SQL Server Data Tools can be deployed. Microsoft has made it easy to convert a BI
Semantic Model developed in PowerPivot add-in for Excel 2010 into a Tabular Project as well
as UDM models from Analysis Services Multidimensional Mode.

To deploy a BI Semantic Model to an Analysis Services Instance, follow these steps:

  1. In SQL Server Data Tools, open the Tabular Project.

  2. Right-click the Tabular Project properties. The Tabular Project Property Pages dialog
window opens. In this dialog window you need to provide information for:

■ (^) Deployment Options
■ Deployment Server
■ (^) DirectQuery Options

  1. In the Server section, type the target Analysis Services server name, and in the
Edition section, specify the Analysis Services server edition. You can leave the
default values for the rest of the options for now.

  2. Click Apply. To deploy, click the Build menu option, and select Deploy
AWTabularProject. The Tabular project AWTabularProject used in this example is
    now deployed.

Deployment Options
The deployment options specify how the project and model is deployed. The processing
option specifi es whether Analysis Services objects should be processed using full processing
