doesconstituteaphotograph?Thedefinitionsgenerallyspecifyatwo-dimensionalpictureofanactualobjectorevent,adepictionofsomethingthathashappenedatacertaintimeandplace.Withinthesebounds,photographyhasdemonstratedbothitspoweranditslimi-tations.Thepowerisinitsgrippingillu-sionofreality,whetherquietordramatic.Thelimitsappearwhentheviewerreal-izesheis
seeing,onasingleflatsurface,onlyselectedportionsofasceneoutofwhichthephotographermustcreate
asenseofthewholeevent.Feelingconstrainedbytheserestric-tions,somephotographershavesetouttobreakthem—oratleastbendthem.
