thefactisthatcolorsarecarelessly


perceivedagreatdealofthetime,be-

causepeoplegenerallyseethe colors


thattheyexpecttosee.Anobjectthat


isusuallypinkisonlymoreorless

pink


or
not

pink
at

all—under

a

tree,

whereitmayassumeagreenishcast;


intheblueglowofafluorescentlight;

orplacednexttoa yellowwall,whereit


picksupareflectionofthewallscolor.

Acamera,whichlaborsundernopre-


conceptions,mayrecordallsuchsub-


tlecolorchanges.

bytheglacialice that

flecksandstainsonitssubtle


beigebackground.Itisnot,then,tobe


regarded
solelyasanobjectofshape,


textureandform;itexhibitsanotheras-


pectofvisionthatis
detectablebythe


seeingeye:color.
