Table 18-1 Total Revenues of Canadian Governments, 2017

18.1 Taxation in Canada

Governments at all levels in Canada—federal, provincial, territorial, and
municipal—use a complex array of taxes to collect revenue. Some are
highly visible, like the GST or income tax, while others are levied directly
on producers and we may not even be aware of them. We pay tax on
what we earn, what we own, and on what we spend. The resulting
revenues for all levels of government combined are almost $850 billion
each year. Table 18-1 shows the revenue raised by the different types of
taxes in 2017.
