fice, no universe. No Divine self-Iimilations,
noneoftheworldswhichfilltherealmsofspace.
Itisallasacrifice,thesacrificeoflovethatlimits
itself that others maygain self-conscious being
andrejoiceintheperfectionoftheirownultimate
Divinity. Andinasmuchasthelifeoftheworld
isbasedonsacrifice,alltruelifeisalsosacrificial

andwhen everyactionisdoneas sacrificethen
the man becomes the perfect, spiritual man.
Now that is hard. The first stageis not so
difficult. Wemaygiveawaylargely; wemay
make our lives useful; but how difficult it is
- our lives being made useful, and wrapped
upinsomeusefulwork-tobeabletosee that
workshiveredintopieces,and look onitsruins
withcalm content. That isoneof the things
thatismeantbysacrifice-thatyoumay throw
thewholeofyourlifeintosomegoodwork,the
wholeof your energyinto some greatscheme,
youmaytoilandbuildandplanandshape,and
youmaynourish yourown begotten schemeas
a mother maycherish the child of herwomb,
and presentlyit fallsto pieces round you. It
