simply by ordering it to stop. However, I encourage everyone to
shake for the benefits they can derive from it. To do this, they can
either pretend that they are shaking or concentrate on the navel,
exhaling as though into the stomach and through the back. If they
continue to exhale until they no longer can, they will begin to shake.
To stop this shaking, just order it to stop and breathe normally.
Shaking and jerking about during practice is caused by nervous-
ness or psychological problems hidden within the mind. Some prac-
titioners who are very suggestable may have read about what hap-
pens and it happens to them. Others seem to shake in a logical
way, which means that if they move the left hand in a circle thirty
six times, then they will move the right hand thirty-six times too.
There are those who are very frightened when this happens.
As the Chi, or the energy of the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kid-
neys, fills the organs, there are specific reactions expressed as
various “shakings”.
- The heart controls the veins and arteries. The Chi of the heart
causes the body to jump up and down like a monkey at play. (This
shows that the Heart Meridian is full of Chi). - The liver controls the tendons. When it fills with Chi, the big
toes and legs may cramp as the Chi swims joyfully in the ocean of
divine ecstasy, like a fish. - The spleen controls the muscles and when they fill with Chi,
they jump like a bird hopping from one branch to another. The place
where it rests feels like fire. This is because the vital Chi of the
spleen is moving around. - The lungs control the skin. When they fill with Chi you will feel
prickly itching and heat all over the body, as though ants were crawl-
ing over you, especially on your face. This is because the vital Chi
of the lung is moving around. - The kidneys control the bones. When they fill with Chi you will
hear the sound of the moving bone. Moving up the spine like a
snake, it sometimes causes sexual arousal.
If you shake too much, the power will scatter and not run in the
Microcosmic Orbit. Shaking sends the power into the tendons,
muscles, limbs and organs, and is good for those who want to
strengthen those parts. I recommend that students sit for half an
hour, shake for five or ten minutes and then stop and concentrate
