Explanation


This formula is suitable for chronic Heat Painful Obstruction Syndrome with swollen, hot and
painful joints flaring up occasionally, occurring against a background of Yin deficiency.



  • Dang Gui nourishes Blood to extinguish Wind.

  • Sheng Di and Zhi Mu nourish Yin.

  • Huang Qin and Lian Qiao clear Heat.

  • Yi Yi Ren, Ku Shen, Hua Shi and Ban Xia drain Dampness and resolve Phlegm.

  • Fang Ji, Fang Feng and Hai Tong Pi expel Wind-Dampness and remove obstructions
    from the channels.

  • Gan Cao harmonizes.


Variations


The following variations are applicable to all the previous formulae.



  • Other herbs that may be added are: Huang Bo Cortex Phellodendri to clear Heat, and Hai
    Tong Pi Cortex Erythrinae variegatae, Wei Ling Xian Radix Clematidis chinensis or
    Sang Zhi Ramulus Mori albae to expel Wind and Dampness.

  • If there are red maculae, add Mu Dan Pi Cortex Moutan radicis, Sheng Di Radix
    Rehmanniae glutinosae, Chi Shao Yao Radix Paeoniae rubrae and Di Fu Zi Fructus
    Kochiae.
