Explanation
- Chai Hu is the emperor herb and it expels Cold from the Lesser Yang. It clears lightly
and it disperses upwards. It expels the pathogenic factor and releases the Exterior. - Huang Qin, minister herb, is bitter and cold and it clears Heat from Lesser Yang. It
combines with Chai Hu: one disperses, the other clears, and together they clear the Lesser
Yang. - Ban Xia, assistant herb, harmonizes the Stomach and subdues rebellious Qi. It therefore
stops nausea and vomiting. - Ren Shen and Gan Cao, also assistant herbs, benefit Stomach-Qi, promote fluids,
harmonize Nutritive and Defensive Qi and tonify the body's Qi to expel the pathogenic
factor. - Sheng Jiang and Da Zao, messenger herbs, harmonize the Stomach, benefit Qi and
harmonize Nutritive and Defensive Qi.
This prescription is ideal for ME patients who experience recurrent feelings of chills and heat for
months or even years. It is particularly indicated since it includes Ren Shen (or Dang Shen)
which tonifies Qi, an important treatment aim in ME.
