Explanation

  • Bing Lang, Hou Po and Cao Guo fragrantly resolve Dampness and expel the pathogenic
factor from the "membranes". This is the anatomical region in between the pleura and
diaphragm. It is somewhat analogous to the Lesser Yang.

  • Zhi Mu nourishes Yin and clears Heat.

  • Bai Shao helps to nourish Yin. Together with Zhi Mu, it helps to prevent injury of Yin.

  • Huang Qin clears Heat.

  • Gan Cao harmonizes.

This prescription is also used for the Lesser-Yang pattern with prevalence of Heat. The main
difference from the previous prescription, is that this one is used in cases of pronounced
Dampness. The main manifestations would be (besides alternation of chills and heat with
prevalence of heat) a feeling of oppression of the chest, nausea or vomiting, headache,
irritability, a feeling of fullness of the diaphragm, sighing, a very sticky and dirty tongue coating
and a Wiry-Slippery pulse.

Dampness is a very frequent condition associated with the Lesser-Yang pattern in chronic ME
and this prescription addresses such a situation.
