racing feeling and breathlessness. There is also some residual Dampness
in the muscles evidenced by the ache, but this is quite secondary in
relation to the general deficiency of Yang.
Treatment principle The main principle of treatment is therefore to tonify Kidney-Yang and
only secondarily to resolve Dampness.
Acupuncture She was given acupuncture to tonify Spleen- and Kidney-Yang and
resolve Dampness using mostly ST-36 Zusanli, SP-6 Sanyinjiao, BL-20
Pishu, BL-21 Weishu to tonify Spleen-Yang (with moxa), BL-23
Shenshu and KI-7 Fuliu to tonify Kidney-Yang (with moxa) and SP-9
Yinlingquan to resolve Dampness.
Herbal treatment The herbal prescription chosen was a variation of You Gui Yin
Restoring the Right [Kidney] Decoction:
Shu Di Huang Radix Rehmanniae glutinosae praeparata 12 g
Shan Zhu Yu Fructus Corni officinalis 4 g
Shan Yao Radix Dioscoreae oppositae 6 g
Gou Qi Zi Fructus Lycii chinensis 6 g
Du Zhong Cortex Eucommiae ulmoidis 6 g
Rou Gui Cortex Cinnamomi cassiae 1.5 g
Fu Zi Radix Aconiti carmichaeli praeparata 1 g
Rou Cong Rong Herba Cistanchis 6 g
Ze Xie Rhizoma Alismatis orientalis 3 g
Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 3 g
Explanation This prescription was altered only with the addition of Rou Cong Rong
to tonify Kidney-Yang and move the stools and Ze Xie to moderate the
effect of the other herbs all of which are hot in energy.
The combination of acupuncture and herbal therapy produced an
immediate improvement which continued gradually and steadily
throughout the course of treatment. All her symptoms were relieved
after 6 months.
