Explanation



  • Huang Qi and Dang Shen tonify Qi.

  • Dang Gui, Bai Shao and Ji Xue Teng nourish Blood and expel Wind from the channels.

  • Tian Ma, Gou Teng, Zhen Zhu Mu and Ling Yang Jiao extinguish Wind.

  • Dan Shen moves Blood.


Case History 26.1


Parkinson's Disease: Liver-Blood Deficiency-Female, Age 51


A 51-year-old woman had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for 2 years. Her main
problem was a tremor of the head which she tried to stop by bending her head forward. She
sometimes felt that her tremor started from the lower back running all the way up the spine to the
head. Apart from this she had few other symptoms. She felt tired easily and her vision was
sometimes blurred. She had been prescribed anticholinergic drugs which produced side-effects
such as a dry mouth and tunnel vision. She was a very tense person with a very strong sense of
responsibility probably deriving from a very strict upbringing. Her tongue was Pale and Thin,
while her pulse was Choppy.


Diagnosis Qi and Blood deficiency of the Liver leading to Liver-Wind.


Treatment principle This patient was treated only with acupuncture and the treatment given
was very simple, being aimed at tonifying Qi and Blood, calming the
Mind and subduing Liver-Wind.


Acupuncture The main points used were:


ST-36 Zusanli and SP-6 Sanyinjiao to tonify Qi and Blood.

HE-7 Shenmen or HE-5 Tongli to calm the Mind and relax the nervous
system.
