Explanation
This formula, which has already been explained in Chapter 5, nourishes Lung-Yin and clears
Heat.
- To harmonize Blood (stop bleeding, eliminate stasis, calm and nourish Blood) add Bai Ji
Rhizoma Bletillae striatae, Ou Jie Nodus Nelumbinis nuciferae rhizomatis and San Qi
Radix Notoginseng. No addition is necessary to calm and nourish Blood as the formula
already contains Sheng Di Huang and Dang Gui. - To astringe add Wu Wei Zi Fructus Schisandrae chinensis. This will also help to nourish
Lung-Yin. - To treat Qi add Mu Li Concha Ostreae. This will also help to nourish Yin.
- If the symptoms of Empty-Heat are pronounced add Qing Hao Herba Artemisiae
apiaceae and Di Gu Pi Cortex Lycii chinensis radicis, both of which also help to stop
bleeding.
Case History 30.1
Bleeding: Lung-Yin Deficiency-Female, Age 65
A 65-year-old woman had been suffering from breathlessness for many years. She had had TB of
the lungs 40 years earlier. Her main problem at the time of consultation was breathlessness on
exertion, general exhaustion and coughing of blood-specked sputum. She also suffered from
night-sweating, a dry throat and a feeling of heat in the afternoon. She was very prone to cold
which immediately affected her chest and caused bronchitis with the expectoration of profuse
yellow-greenish sputum. She was overweight. Her tongue was slightly Red, Swollen and with a
rootless coating in the front part. Her pulse was Slippery.
Diagnosis This patient suffered from two conditions causing rather contradictory
signs. In fact, there are clear symptoms of Lung-Yin deficiency:
night-sweating, dry throat, breathlessness, feeling of heat in the evening
and cough with blood-tinged sputum. However, the tongue and the
pulse show a different condition. Although the tongue has a rootless
coating in the front part which does show Lung-Yin deficiency, in this
condition it should be Thin rather than Swollen. The pulse should be
