Eight-Ingredient Decoction:
Sheng Di Huang Radix Rehmanniae glutinosae 6 g
Shan Zhu Yu Fructus Corni officinalis 3 g
Shan Yao Radix Dioscoreae oppositae 6 g
Ze Xie Rhizoma Alismatis orientalis 4 g
Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos 6 g
Mu Dan Pi Cortex Moutan radicis 6 g
Zhi Mu Radix Anemarrhenae asphodeloidis 4 g
Huang Bo Cortex Phellodendri 4 g
Xiao Ji Herba Cephalanoplos segeti 6 g
Pu Huang Pollen Typhae 4 g
Dang Gui Radix Angelicae sinensis 6 g
Mu Li Concha Ostreae 12 g
Explanation The first eight herbs constitute the root formula (exchanging Sheng Di
for Shu Di to nourish Yin more) to nourish Kidney-Yin and clear
Empty-Heat from the Bladder.
Xiao Ji was added to stop bleeding from the urinary tract.
Pu Huang was added to move Blood and stop bleeding.
Dang Gui was added to nourish Blood.
Mu Li was added to firm Qi.
If we analyse this prescription, we can see that the four aims of
treatment to stop bleeding are fulfilled:
Harmonize Blood
Stop bleeding: Xiao Ji
Move Blood: Pu Huang
Calm Blood: Sheng Di
Nourish Blood: Dang Gui
Treat the Root-Cause: The root-formula (nourish Yin and clear
Empty-Heat)
Astringe: Shan Zhu Yu
Treat Qi: Mu Li (firm Qi).
This prescription stopped the bleeding almost immediately. However,
bleeding recurred after 3 months; again, I used a similar formula and
again the bleeding stopped, only to start again after 2 months. At this
point I was almost certain this patient had carcinoma of the bladder. It
