Explanation



  • Ban Xia, Zhu Ru and Nan Xing resolve Phlegm. Nan Xing, in particular, resolves
    Wind-Phlegm.

  • Chen Pi and Fu Ling help to resolve Phlegm by draining Dampness.

  • Zhi Shi moves Qi and helps to resolve Phlegm.

  • Shi Chang Pu opens the orifices.

  • Ren Shen tonifies Qi.

  • Gan Cao, Sheng Jiang and Da Zao harmonize.


This prescription is used for Wind-Phlegm, i.e. a combination of internal Wind and Phlegm. It is
therefore used only in old people who are most likely to suffer from Wind-Phlegm, such as
would occur after a stroke. Hence the addition of Shi Chang Pu which opens the orifices blocked
by Phlegm. "Opening the orifices" in this case would address the symptom of slurred speech, for
example.
