  • Ren Shen and Fu Ling tonify Qi.

  • Suan Zao Ren and Wu Wei Zi absorb leakages (such as night sweating), nourish Yin
    and calm the Mind.

  • Bai Zi Ren, Yuan Zhi and Zhu Sha calm the Mind.

  • Jie Geng directs the formula to the Upper Burner, i.e. the Heart.


Variations


These variations apply to both above prescriptions.



  • In case of Phlegm and a pronounced feeling of oppression in the chest add Gua Lou
    Fructus Trichosanthis.

  • If there are symptoms and signs of Liver-Yang rising add Gou Teng Ramulus Uncariae
    and Shi Jue Ming Concha Haliotidis.

  • In cases of pronounced chest pain add Dan Shen Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae (or increase
    it in Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan Heavenly Emperor Tonifying the Heart Pill).

  • If there are signs of Blood deficiency as well as Yin deficiency add Shou Wu Radix
    Polygoni multiflori, Dang Gui Radix Angelicae sinensis and Dan Shen Radix Salviae
    miltiorrhizae.

  • If there is mental restlessness and insomnia add (or increase the dosage if already in the
    prescription) Suan Zao Ren Semen Ziziphi spinosae, Wu Wei Zi Fructus Schisandrae
    chinensis and Long Chi Dens Draconis.

  • In case of Empty-Heat signs add Gui Ban Plastrum Testudinis and Huang Bo Cortex
    Phellodendri.
