Diagnosis This is a clear condition of stagnation of Liver-Qi obviously deriving
from emotional stress.


Treatment principle The treatment principle adopted was to move Liver-Qi, eliminate
stagnation, promote the descending of Stomach-Qi, calm the Mind and
settle the Ethereal Soul. She was treated with acupuncture and herbs.


Acupuncture The acupuncture points used were selected from the following:


P-6 Neiguan, with even method, to move Liver-Qi, subdue rebellious
Stomach-Qi, calm the Mind and settle the Ethereal Soul. This is an
excellent point, especially for women, for stagnation of Liver-Qi
deriving from emotional stress, particularly that from relationship
difficulties. At the same time, it regulates the Upper and Middle Burner
of the Stomach and stops epigastric pain.

ST-40 Fenglong, with even method, to harmonize the Stomach and
subdue rebellious Stomach-Qi. It combines well with P-6, one on the
right and the other on the left, to harmonize the Middle Burner.

Ren-12 Zhongwan and ST-36 Zusanli, with reinforcing method, to
strengthen the Stomach.

ST-21 Liangmen and Ren-11, with even method, to promote the
descending of Stomach-Qi.

LIV-14 Qimen and G.B.-34 Yanglingquan, with even method, to
promote the free flow of Liver-Qi and move Qi. G.B.-34, in
combination with Ren-12, moves Qi in the epigastrium.

Herbal treatment The decoction used was a variation of Chai Hu Su Gan Tang Bupleurum
Soothing the Liver Decoction:


Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 4 g
Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae albae 9 g
Zhi Ke Fructus Citri aurantii 6 g
Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 4.5 g
Chen Pi Pericarpium Citri reticulatae 4 g
Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi rotundi 4.5 g
Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici wallichii 4.5 g
Mu Xiang Radix Saussureae 3 g
He Huan Pi Cortex Albizziae julibrissin 6 g
Dang Shen Radix Codonopsis pilosulae 6 g
