Explanation
This formula, which has already been explained in Chapter 12, is the formula for distension and
pain from Liver-Qi stagnation. It usually gives excellent results.
Variations
- If the pain is predominant add Qing Pi Pericarpium Citri reticulatae viridae and Yu Jin
Tuber Curcumae. - If Qi stagnation has given rise to Fire eliminate Chuan Xiong, reduce the dosage of Xiang
Fu and add Mu Dan Pi Cortex Moutan radicis, Zhi Zi Fructus Gardeniae jasminoidis and
Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae toosendan. - If Qi stagnation has given rise to Fire and this has begun to injure Yin eliminate Chuan
Xiong, reduce the dosage of Xiang Fu and add Dang Gui Radix Angelicae sinensis, Gou
Qi Zi Fructus Lycii chinensis, Mu Dan Pi Cortex Moutan radicis and Mei Gui Hua Flos
Rosae rugosae. - If Liver-Qi stagnates horizontally and invades the Spleen causing diarrhoea add Bai Zhu
Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae and Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos. - If Liver-Qi stagnates horizontally and invades the Stomach causing nausea add Ban Xia
Rhizoma Pinelliae ternatae, Sha Ren Fructus seu Semen Amomi and Huo Xiang Herba
Agastachis.
