Explanation


This formula is used for a more severe case of retention of food causing abdominal pain and
constipation with a very pronounced feeling of fullness in the abdomen.



  • Da Huang dissolves food accumulation by moving downwards.

  • Zhi Shi makes Qi descend and helps Da Huang to move downwards. It also relieves
    abdominal fullness.

  • Huang Lian and Huang Qin clear Heat and drain Dampness. They therefore help to
    resolve food retention when this has given rise to Heat and Dampness.

  • Fu Ling and Ze Xie drain Dampness and help to resolve food accumulation.

  • Bai Zhu tonifies the Spleen and resolves Dampness.

  • Shen Qu is a digestive herb which resolves food retention.
