Explanation The first seven herbs constitute the Ba Zheng Tang which clears Heat
and resolves Dampness from the Bladder. Da Huang was eliminated
because his tongue did not have a thick or dry tongue coating.

The next five herbs are part of the Xiao Ji Yin Zi which clears Heat and

cools Blood in the Bladder and stops hematuria. Pu Huang was

eliminated as the urinary bleeding was not very pronounced; other herbs

were eliminated as already contained in the first formula. Sheng Di

Huang was replaced with Shu Di Huang as he had deficiency of

Kidney-Yang.

Tian Kui Zi and Shi Shang Bai were added as they are specific

anti-carcinogenic herbs which enter the Bladder.

After taking this formula, which treats only the Manifestation (i.e.

Damp-Heat in the Bladder), for 2 months, the treatment principle was

changed diverting attention to treating the Root and the Manifestation

simultaneoulsy, i.e. tonifying the Kidneys and resolving Damp-Heat

from the Bladder. The formula used was a variation of Zhi Bo Di Huang

Wan Anemarrhena-Phellodendron-Rehmannia Pill:
