Explanation
This remedy tonifies Spleen- and Kidney-Yang. The tongue presentation appropriate to this
remedy is a Pale and wet body.
Spleen- and Kidney-Yang Deficiency, Water Overflowing
This pattern is almost the same as the previous one, characterized by deficiency of Yang of the
Spleen and Kidneys. The main difference is that there is pronounced oedema (called "Water
overflowing"). When Spleen- and Kidney-Yang are deficient they fail to transform, transport and
excrete fluids, so that these accumulate and give rise to oedema. Severe deficiency of
Kidney-Yang also involves failing of the Fire of the Gate of Vitality. When this Fire is deficient
it fails to warm the organs which rely on heat for their physiological functions: thus the Bladder
is unable to transform urine and becomes cold, the Lower Burner fails to transform and excrete
fluids and the Small Intestine cannot separate fluids.
Clinical Manifestations
A sallow complexion, anaemia, oedema of the whole body, ache in the lower back, abdominal
fullness, chilliness, mental depression, loose stools, cold limbs, scanty or profuse urine,
pronounced albuminuria, a Pale and Swollen tongue and a Deep and Weak pulse.
All these are clear symptoms and signs of severe Spleen- and Kidney-Yang deficiency. When the
