Huskies fend off late Scot pressure in district

Corner kicks and free
kicks flew left and right
across the front of the Forest
Hills Northern net as the
Fighting Scots fought to
extend their season beyond
Wednesday evening’s
MHSAA Division 1 District
opener at Scotland Yard.
But putting the ball in the
net is tough to do in the
Division 1 state tournament.
Forest Hills Northern
scored in the 15th minute
and held off the onslaught
from the Caledonia varsity
boys’ soccer team in the
second half to earn a 1-
win over the Scots and a
spot in next week’s district
semifinals back in
Caledonia.
Ethan Hossler scored the
game’s lone goal for the
Huskies, knocking in a cen-
tering ball that came from
the right side of the box off
the foot of teammate Seth
Scharich.
While the ball danced
around the Forest Hills
Northern box late in the sec-
ond half, it was a struggle for
the Scots to create chances
through most of the first 40
minutes of the ballgame. Too
often the Scots tried for shots
through the air up field rather
than playing to the feet of
their teammates through the
midfield.
Caledonia did improve
was the first half wore on.
Senior midfielder Kyle
Buchan managed to get
deep into the right corner
and get a pass into the box,
but teammates Austin
DeVries and Jack Mulder
just weren’t quite able to
get a good foot on the ball
to get it on net.
Sophomore forward
Nathan Maas had a couple of
solid attempts to shoot
through the Forest Hills
Northern crowd in front of
its net in the late stages of the
game, with one midway
through the second half forc-
ing Husky goalkeeper Toby
Bohn to make a one handed
save diving to his left. That
action came during a surge of
three consecutive corner
kicks by the Fighting Scots.
Ten minutes later, Buchan
had a strong shot from the
top of the box deflected away
from the goal after a long
throw into the offensive end.
Maas and Collin Witvoet
were both able to get their
heads on separate corner
kicks from their teammates,
but neither could find the
back of the net.
The referee let some phys-
ical play go around the Forest
Hills Northern box, enough
that complaints of it drew a
yellow card on the Caledonia
side.
Caledonia was second
only to East Kentwood in the
OK Red Conference this fall,
finishing conference play
with a 7-3-4 record. The
Scots end the season at 9-6-
overall. Of the Scots’ six
losses this season, four were
by a single goal and the other
two 2-0 defeats.
Forest Hills Northern
will face Grand Ledge
Monday at 6 p.m. back at
Scotland Yard in one of the
district’s two semifinal
match-ups. East Kentwood
takes on Rockford in the
other Monday in Kentwood.
The winners from those two
ballgames will meet for the
district championship
Wednesday, Oct. 20, at
Scotland Yard.
