(nauticaltwilight),thisimageshowsearthshine
overthearchof DurdleDoorin Dorset.The
finalpictureis theresultof a six-shotmulti-row
panorama,andtheviewing distance was less
than 1km away.

ForthisimageI usedthePhotoPillsappto
calculatethetimeandangleof themoon
toachievea lunarrainbowandauroraover
Skogafosswaterfallin Iceland.Theexposure
timewas 13 seconds,whichgavea lovely
sense of movement to the water.
Experimentwithstrobes
Onestill,coldmodelcapturedusingtwo
strobes(dampened)at KimmeridgeBayin
Dorset.Thispicturerequireda 30-second
exposuretocreatethefast-movingcloud
effectandtoshowthe star trails dazzling
brightly in the sky.
LUNAR PHOTOGRAPHY Technique

correct.If multiplegradsareusedthen
themoonwillsimplyappearblurryowing
tothelongexposuretime.
Realistically,therearetwowaystoshoot
themoonandthelandscapetogether.The
firstrequiresa doubleexposure:a short
oneforthemoon,anda longeroneforthe
foreground.Whenattemptingthis
technique,besuretowatchoutforany
reflectingmoonlightonthelandscape,
asthemoonmovesextremelyquickly
throughthesky,sothetwoexposuresmay
notalign.Again,anyartificiallightcan
lenda helpinghandherebydecreasingthe
exposuretimerequiredforthelandscape.
But,truthbetold,it’sextremelydifficultto
combinethetwoexposureseffectively.
Thesecondtechniqueinvolvestakinga
greycard,settinga longexposureforthe
landscape,placingthegreycardoverthe
moonlitpartofthesky,andthenmovingit
justbeforetheendoftheexposure(inthe
finalsecond).Oncemastered,thismethod
worksbetterthanshootingtwoexposures
asyoucanslowlymovethecardupwards,
seamlesslyblendingthesky.It takes
practice,astheblendintheskycanbe
somewhatunevenattimes,andbyno
meanswillthisachieve a razor-sharp
moon surface.
