56.2 Expressing disagreement

The words and phrases most commonly used in the expression of disagreement are
the following:
no‘no’
no sé‘I don’t know’
no estar seguro‘not to be sure’
de ninguna manera/ningún modo‘certainly not’, ‘by no means’
¿tú crees?‘you think so?’
no creo‘I don’t think so’
no es cierto/verdad‘that’s not true’
no estar de acuerdo‘not to agree’
estar equivocado‘to be wrong’
¡qué va!‘nonsense’, ‘rubbish’
¡cómo que... !‘what do you mean.. .’

Apart from no, which is frequent in most contexts, on its own or preceding one of the
expressions above, expressions like no sé, no estoy seguro(a), are used to express
mild disagreement with a proposal or invitation to do something, in contrast with
de ninguna manera/ningún modo, which conveys strong disagreement.

Phrases like¿tú crees?, no creo, express mild disagreement with a statement, such as an
opinion. In the same context, no es cierto/verdad, no estar de acuerdo, estar
equivocado, are slightly stronger, although less categoric than¡qué va! The strongest
form of disagreement in this context is conveyed by the phrase¡cómo que... !,
followed by a statement similar to that made by the person we disagree with.
