Modern Spanish Grammar: A Practical Guide

63.2.2 Me alegro/nos alegramos de que+ subjunctive

Alegrarse, ‘to be glad’, is a reflexive verb, so you will need to use a reflexive pronoun
with it (i.e. me, te, se, nos, os, or se). In this construction, a verb of emotion, alegrarse,
is followed by a clause introduced by que, which requires a subjunctive: present
subjunctive if we are expressing sympathy with a current or future state or event, and
perfect or imperfect subjunctive if reference is to the past.

 23.6 (p. 109)
Me alegro de que estés bien otra vez.
I’m glad you are well again.
Me alegro de que se case.
I’m glad you are getting married.
Me alegro de que hayáis conseguido lo que queríais.
I’m glad you got what you wanted.
Me alegro mucho de que hayas conseguido trabajo.
I’m very glad you got a job.

To say one was glad about something, use the preterite of alegrarse (e.g. me alegré,‘I
was glad’); the verb in the que clause must be in the imperfect subjunctive.
Me alegré mucho de que te ascendieran.
I was glad you were promoted.
Nos alegramos mucho de que la nombraran directora.
We were glad she was appointed director.

 19.2 (p. 95); 18.1.4 (p. 85)

Note: Although strictly alegrarse should be followed by de in this construction, this
rule is by no means always observed.
