66 Expressing gratitude


This chapter deals with the concept of gratitude. Generally speaking, expressions of
gratitude, including the word gracias, ‘thank you’, tend to be used much less
frequently in Spanish than in English. This is specially true among equals and,
generally, in any informal situation.

66.1 Expressing gratitude


Gratitude is expressed in Spanish with the following expressions. Several of these are set
phrases, but others vary according to the context. Those at the top of each list tend to
be more informal and common than the rest.

The expressions listed here are the ones most Spanish speakers would use to express
gratitude. Other less frequent phrases have not been included.
Gracias.
Thank you.

Muchas gracias.
Thank you very much.
Muchísimas gracias.
Thanks a lot.
Un millón de/mil gracias.
Thank you very much.

Es usted muy amable/eres muy amable.
That’s very kind of you.
Se/te lo agradezco (mucho/muchísimo).
I’m (very) grateful to you.

Se/te lo agradezco sinceramente/de todo corazón/en el alma.
I’m extremely grateful to you.
Le estoy muy/sumamente agradecido/a.
I’m very grateful to you.

No sabe cuánto/cómo se lo agradezco.
You don’t know how grateful I am.
