69.3 Giving orders
69.3.1 The imperative, the present tense or the infinitive
As with directions and instructions, direct orders or commands are normally given with
the imperative, the present indicative or the infinitive. The use of the infinitive in this
context is generally uncommon in Latin America.
Sal de aquí.
Get out of here.
¡Cállate!
Be quiet!
Te vas de aquí inmediatamente.
You get out of here immediately.
¡No hacerlo nunca más!
Don’t ever do it again!69.3.2 A+ infinitive
This construction is a very colloquial and peremptory way of ordering someone to do
something. It is used normally by adults addressing young children.
¡A dormir! Es muy tarde.
Go to sleep! It’s very late.
¡A hacer los deberes/las tareas!
