APPLYING YOUR KNOWLEDGE

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
1.Think about nurses’ responsibility to assist
patients with daily hygiene. Then reflect on
how you would respond in the following situ-
ations. See if your classmates would respond as
you do.
a.A same-age, opposite-sex patient requires
total assistance with hygiene.
b.A patient confined to bed but able to assist
with hygiene refuses to do so.
c.An elderly incontinent patient refuses your
offer to assist her with perineal care.
2.Interview patients of different backgrounds or
cultures to find out how they perform their
daily hygiene routine. Note how their routine
is similar to or different from your personal
routine. What would you do to assist these
people if they were placed in your care?

REFLECTIVE PRACTICE USING CRITICAL
THINKING SKILLS
Use the following expanded scenario from
Chapter 31 in your textbook to answer the
questions below.
Scenario:Sonya Delamordo is an older
Hispanic woman who has had a stroke, result-
ing in right-sided paralysis. She is being
discharged from the hospital and will now live
with her daughter, who will be her primary
caretaker. Her daughter, who is eager to help
her mother, asks numerous questions about
how to keep her mother clean. She tells the
nurse she is worried about being able to take
care of her mother’s fine hair, as well as her
dentures and hearing aids.
