PATIENT CARE STUDY

Read the following patient care study and use
your nursing process skills to answer the
questions below.
Scenario:George Gibson, an 81-year-old,
married, African American man, reluctantly
reports, after much prodding from his wife,
that he is not hearing as well as he used to be.
“I don’t know what the trouble is,” he tells
you. “I’m in perfect health, always have been.
More and more, people just seem to be mum-
bling instead of talking.” You notice he is
seated on the edge of his chair and bends
toward you when you speak to him. His wife
reports that he has stopped going out and

pretty much stays in his room whenever peo-
ple come to visit because he is embarrassed by
his inability to hear. “This is really a shame,
because George was always the life of the
party,” she says. You ask Mr. Gibson if he
has ever had his hearing evaluated, and he
tells you no, until now, he’s been trying to
convince himself that nothing’s wrong with
his hearing.
