Chapter 11: Playing with Props ....................................................................................

In This Chapter

Projecting your self-image

Putting glasses to good use

Performing the rituals – smoking, make-up, and dressing

E

very moment of every day you project an image of yourself. So does
everyone else. People use a plethora of props, such as items of clothing,
pens, glasses, smoking paraphernalia, and make-up to create an image.
Mention props to an actress and her eyes come alive. She knows that these
inanimate objects are her friends. Props can create an image behind which
you can hide, or through which you can reveal your character.

As you observe someone and the way in which she accessorises herself, you
can figure out what that person’s like. Your success rate depends on your
level of sensitivity, and your ability to recognise and interpret what other
people’s choice of props, or accessories, is revealing.

In this chapter, I look at how the way you handle your props reflects your
thoughts, mood, and attitude. I also consider the choices of props, and how you
use them to create a perception. Finally, I consider the power behind the prop.

Using Accessories to Reflect Mental States ..............................................

How people use their accessories – glasses, pens, briefcases, and handbags,
for example – indicate how they’re feeling. The pen clicker at a meeting, the
nervous traveller riffling through her bag, and the starlet hiding behind her
sunglasses all tell you through the way they play with their props how
they’re feeling inside.
