ASSESSING YOUR GROUPLEADERSHIPSKILLS

Inspired by William Dyer and numerous other sources.

More and more work is being done in groups and teams, because:

✔ Organizations and technology are becoming more complex. To get the job done today,
leaders need to be skilled at marshaling complementary skills from a wide range of pro-
fessions and professionals. [☛4.9 Professional Expertise]
✔ Stakeholder systems are becoming more complex, and more people require input into
decisions in return for their support. [☛5.7 Stakeholder Groups]
✔ Commitment, as opposed to compliance, is needed in knowledge-based organizations.
Committed people generate higher-quality, more innovative products and services. But
commitment isn’t automatic. It’s an outcome of effective leadership, and is enhanced
by involving and informing people and encouraging them to influence decisions with-
in their workgroups or teams.

Rate your group leadership skills from 1 = Definitely needs improvement, to 5 = Very capable.
