A gang of thieves can share values, but they are in violation of ...fundamental principles.”
Consistent with the values of this book, we simply encourage you to clarify your deep-seated
beliefs, whether you call them values or not; then, practice them!
EXAMPLES OF VALUES CATEGORIES
Here are just a few examples of values categories. Consider these as you embark on a values-
clarification process for your workgroup or organization.
AN EXAMPLE OF A BEHAVIORAL VALUES DESCRIPTION
The difficulty with words and phrases like those provided in the values list is that they are over-
ly general. To be actionable, value statements need to be stated in behavioral terms. Here is an
example.

Ethical Behavior
General statement: Everyone in our organization will strictly uphold the highest ethical standards.
Some measurable and observable levels of implementation success:
- Never accepting gifts of more than $25 from vendors, suppliers, or anyone who could possibly benefit from
association with the Company, unless the gift is clearly on a reciprocal basis. - In cultures where gift exchange is an accepted practice, exercising care and prudent judgment.
- Under no conditions will we offer or accept a kickback to or from anyone.
- Ensure that all employees understand the Company’s policy concerning ethical behavior.
- Always discuss potential ethical concerns, or conflicts of interest, with a manager or team leader.
Assume you will be unable to communicate with your organization over the next six months. Write a one-page memo
that tells people how you want the organization to be led in your absence. A condensed statement of this sort would
include many of your values.
