122 12. THE BUDDHA’S MINISTRY
In due course Venerable Aògulimála attained arahantship.
Referring to his memorable conversion by the Buddha, he says:
“Some creatures are subdued by force,
Some by the hook, and some by whips,
But I by such a One was tamed,
Who needed neither staff nor sword.” 195
The Buddha spent the remaining twenty-five years of his life mostly in
Sávatthì at the Jetavana Monastery built by Anáthapióðika, the million-
