A genogram, a diagram of the family composition and structure, can be
helpful in viewing the family structure comprehensively if the core unit
is circled and connections of other members of the family to this core are
clearly indicated (Figure 3-1).Family Function
Family function assessment is focused on how members interact with one another.
Several tests may be used to assess family function. A picture of the family
from the child’s perspective can be enlightening about the family relation-
ships, as well as a way to observe family interactions. The important aspects
of this assessment are the determination of the family’s ability to
