As the end of the season approaches,
Andy Murray is building up a head of
steam to bring hope of a fruitful 2022.
Two weeks after picking up his first
victory over a top-ten player this year
he claimed another by defeating the
most promising youngster in the men’s
game, Jannik Sinner, in the second
round of the Stockholm Open.
A victory for Murray against Poland’s
Hubert Hurkacz in Vienna recently
provided a much-needed confidence
boost after so many narrow losses
against some of the best players in the
world, and this latest victory yesterday
showed that he is indeed on the right
track. The 34-year-old produced his
most consistent level of play in some
time to see off his 20-year-old
opponent 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
So often this year Murray has, to his
cost, let slip opportunities that have
come his way, but he was relentless
from start to finish against Sinner, the
world No 10. He faced only one break
point throughout his two hours and 15

“As a person, he’s very calm and
considered,” Murray said. “He’s a good
communicator as well, which is
certainly not one of my strengths, so it’s
something that I look for in a coach. He
has a very good reputation in British
tennis and he’s certainly done a good
job with a number of different players.”

Murray is hoping Carril’s calm ap-
proach can rub off on him. The Scot has
a bad habit of shouting in frustration
when things are not going his way on
court. “It’s something that I constantly
try to work on,” Murray said. “It’s some-
thing I wish I didn’t do. Some of it comes
down to me struggling to communicate

what I’m feeling away from the court.
Often when I’m on the court those feel-
ings come out when I’m under pressure
or not feeling great about my game.
“It’s interesting because in football I
watch [Pep] Guardiola, [Jürgen] Klopp
and [Sir Alex] Ferguson standing on the
side of the pitch screaming at their
players, the referee or whoever, and
they’re considered to be the greatest
managers of all time. I’m not sure it’s
seen as a negative for them as much.
“In tennis, because it’s more of a
gentlemen’s sport, when someone
shows their emotion or gets pissed off
it’s always seen as a negative. I’m not
saying that it is never a bad thing, at
times for me it’s not been good. But
there are times when I feel like I need to
let some emotions out and it makes me
feel a little bit better on the court.”
Dan Evans has also reached the quar-
ter-finals in Stockholm. After receiving
a first-round bye, the British fourth seed
defeated Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich
Fokina 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and next plays
Frances Tiafoe, of the US.

minutes on court, and needed only one
match point to seal a second ATP Tour
quarter-final appearance in two years.
Today he plays Tommy Paul, the world
No 52 from the United States.
“It is probably my best win this
season and I want to keep it going now,”
Murray said. “If I want to move back
up the rankings and have good runs
at tournaments again, I need to win
these matches.
“It’s good to start to turn those
matches around. Now I’m in the quar-
ters and I want to have a deep run here.”
Murray is playing and moving like a
competitor who is ranked far higher
than his present position of world
No 143. It is surely only a matter of time
before he re-enters the top 100, perhaps
even before the end of the year if he
goes on to win the title in Stockholm.
This would help him to earn direct
entry to January’s Australian Open,
although he will almost certainly
receive a main-draw wild card if not.
“I think I still have a lot to offer,”
Murray said. “I am still able to compete
and win matches against top-ten
players. If my body stays good and I am
able to build momentum, I believe I can
get right up there again.”
This is a promising start for Murray’s
coaching partnership with Esteban
Carril. The 44-year-old Spaniard, who
formerly mentored Johanna Konta and
Katie Swan, is on a trial in Stockholm
this week with a view to working
alongside Murray’s existing coach,
Jamie Delgado, on the tour next year.
