Watch out, England
Absentees rise
for Southgate
Paul Joyce
Jack Grealish is to be assessed by
England having reported that he felt
unwell hours after Declan Rice had
withdrawn from Gareth Southgate’s
squad due to illness.
Grealish, the Manchester City
forward, trained at St George’s Park yes-
terday and Southgate is hopeful he will
be fit, although the 26-year-old will have
to be checked by England’s medical staff.
England will qualify for the 2022
World Cup with victories over Albania
tomorrow and San Marino on Monday,
though Rice’s absence leaves Southgate
facing a midfield conundrum.
England are already without Mason
Mount, who has been delayed in join-
ing up with the squad after undergoing
dental surgery to remove four wisdom
teeth, while James Ward-Prowse pulled
out on Monday. He has also been

England left devastated
Simon Wilde Abu Dhabi
Eoin Morgan said that his England
side were devastated after crashing
out in the semi-final of the T20
World Cup against New Zealand
in Abu Dhabi.
England were striving to
become the first men’s team to
hold the 50-over and T20 World
Cups at the same time but after
leaking 57 runs from overs 17 to 19
they were beaten by five wickets
with six balls to spare.
Morgan has won 115 of the 194
white-ball England matches he
has captained but this will go
down as one of his most bitter
defeats, given that his side were
on top for much of New
Zealand’s chase and led by 56
with only four overs
remaining. Jimmy Neesham,
the all-rounder, then
launched a ferocious assault
on Chris Jordan in the 17th
over, which cost 23.
“We’re devastated,”
Morgan said. “To be on the
wrong side of a close game is
not easy to take. We fought
unbelievably well today on a
wicket that didn’t necessarily
suit our batting but we
managed to post around a
par score and we were
brilliant with the ball. We
were right in the game,
probably until Jimmy
Neesham came to the
wicket — if not ahead of

Villa pay £3m
to get Gerrard
Gary Jacob
Aston Villa hope that Steven Gerrard
will become the club’s new manager in
the next 48 hours.
Rangers have reluctantly conceded
that Gerrard looks set to leave after 3½
years in charge at Ibrox during which
he ended the club’s decade-long wait for
the Scottish title. Villa are believed to be
paying about £3 million in compensa-
tion for the former Liverpool and
England captain.
Gerrard, 41, was quickly installed as
Villa’s No 1 target after the sacking of
Dean Smith on Sunday, in response to
a fifth successive league defeat. That
loss left the club in 16th place in the
Premier League.
Talks between the clubs have fol-
lowed, led by the Villa chief executive,
Christian Purslow, whom Gerrard
