Your turn

The Week Junior • November 12, 2021

Have you done something interesting or raised money for a cause you care about?
Whatever you’re up to, we want to hear about it at [email protected].

Friends of Animals
Since 1957, Friends of Animals has
advocated for animals around the world.
It produces educational programs and
leads conservation e orts to ensure the
safe treatment of both wild animals and
pets. The organization has sponsored
sanctuaries for primates in Africa and
worked with environmental lawyers to
create rules that protect the rights of
wildlife. Find out more at

CHARITY OF THE WEEK

Editor’s note

We couldn’t wait to see the
results of our second annual
survey of kids ages 8 to 14 across
America. A er all, it’s our job to
know what’s on your mind! Your
responses were fascinating. You told
us how much you care about world events, from
the development of the Covid-19 vaccine to the
withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. You said
the top issues leaders should address are education,
the environment, and hunger. Although times have
been tough during the pandemic, you said there have
been bright spots too. And you told us loud and clear
that your generation deserves a say in important
decisions that get made, you believe your actions can
make a positive diff erence, and adults should listen
more to kids. We completely agree! Turn to page 12
to see the results for yourself—and remember, all of
us at The Week Junior are listening!

IT’S YOUR TURN

My name is Shalev and
I’m a fourth grade student at
SAR Academy in the Bronx,
New York. My friends and I
put together a bake sale in
my neighborhood to support
HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid
Society. Our money will go to their
Afghan Crisis Response campaign.
Everyone came with baked goods
to sell, and two hours (and 200
pastries) later, we made $2,070! We
decided to do this after I read in The
Week Junior about the refugees on
the border. Since all my friends
love to bake, we decided this is
how we could help.

Why do you appreciate
your grandparents?
Grandparents can play a special role in children’s
lives, and they are always worth celebrating! We
recently asked readers of The Week Junior to
share their thoughts about a grandparent or
another older person in their life. To participate,
ask a parent or guardian to download the form
(like the one at right) at theweekjunior.com/
activities. Fill it out and have an adult send it to
us at [email protected]. We’ll feature
some of the responses in future issues.
