Overhang Marking Gauge

RIGINALLY,I MADE THISjig to mark some laminate slightly over-
sized for trimming. Then I realized how handy the jig would
be for other tasks, like marking a cutting line on the edges of an irreg-
ular deck. For a one-time job, it’s easy to make up a jig with a few
scraps held together by a C-clamp. Or, you can make a more perma-
nent adjustable version, as shown in the drawing above.

Making Pencil Lines Visible with Chalk

N DARK WOODS,SUCHas walnut, go over your pencil line with
chalk. The chalk will adhere to the wood, not to the graphite,
resulting in a black-on-white line that’s easy to see.
