internalization n
in psychology, the process of acceptance of external norms as one’s own.
An individual may start with learning what the societal norms are, go
through a process of understanding why they are of value, and finally
accepting the norm as their own viewpoint. In sociocultural theory, inter-
nalisation is the process by which a person’s activity is initially mediated by
other people or cultural artifacts but later comes to be controlled by the per-
son as he or she appropriates resources to regulate his or her own activities.

internal validityn
(in research design) the extent to which the treatment delivered to subjects
in an experimental study is responsible for the observed change(s) in
participants’ behaviour. Examples of the threats to internal validity (i.e.
possible explanations for the changes other than the treatment) include
historywhere there are environmental influences on the participants, or
maturationwhere participants matured, during the period between the
pre-test and the post-test, which suggests that the change could have resulted
from something other than the treatment itself.
