an alphabetic writing system used for many languages, including English. It
consists of letters which may represent different sounds or sound combina-
tions in different languages. For example, the letter wrepresents /w/ in
English as /cwÑptvr/ water but /v/ in German /cvasvr/ Wasser “water”.
