If you have the time and the required materials, consider performing these optional activities:


  • Table 7-1 lists compounds for which stock solutions are handy to have on hand in any lab. Among them, these
    compounds represent the most common cation and anion species we work with in this book. For each compound, look
    up the formula and formula weight (don’t forget to consider water of hydration) and enter it in the table. Look up the
    solubility of the compound and use it to determine an appropriate molarity for a stock solution. Calculate the mass of
    the compound that is required to make up 100 mL of the stock solution.

  • For as many of these compounds as you have access to (and time available), mix up stock solutions. Record the actual
    mass that you use and determine the actual molarity of each of your stock solutions using the correct number of
    significant digits.
