Chapter 14 Laboratory: Gas Chemistry 263

RQEWEvI UESTIOnS

q 1 : If a reaction between acetic acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate produces 1.585 liters of carbon dioxide gas at a
temperature of 297.0 K and a pressure of 100.000 kPa, how many moles of carbon dioxide were produced?

q: 2 Use the Ideal Gas Law to determine how many liters one mole of gas occupies at a temperature of 273.15 K and a
pressure of 101.325 kPa.

oALIpToN ACTIvITIES
If you have time and the required materials, consider performing these optional activities:

  • Verify your experimental results for this lab by standardizing the acetic acid concentration in an
aliquot of vinegar via titration, as described in Laboratory 11.4.

  • There are two possibly significant sources of experimental error that we ignored for this lab.
Carbon dioxide is soluble in water, which reduces the amount of gas collected. Offsetting this,
as the carbon dioxide bubbles through the water in the gas-collection trough, it absorbs water
in the form of vapor, which increases the amount of gas collected. Use a standard reference
source to look up the solubility of carbon dioxide in water and the vapor pressure of water (both
are temperature-sensitive) and decide how you might take these variables into account.
